Brief an die Gastfamilie

Hi Host Family:)!

You can call me Vicky, short for Victoria. All my family and friends call me that, so it’s only right that you do too. I am a 20 year old girl born in a family of two children, myself being the oldest, to a Zambian mother and a Zimbabwean father. However, raised in a single parent home. I grew up with lots of uncles, aunts, cousins, second cousins and some third cousins too around me, all from my mother’s side. For some reason our parents had a thing for shipping us all to our gran’s house during school holidays or family celebrations, which wasn’t all that bad because we became undeniably close and because our gran made the best food.  There were so many of us around, that the older cousins looked out for the younger ones and vice versa but you know the law of the jungle it only works one way. I was always surrounded by so much love that I grew up grateful knowing that I didn’t necessarily have to have everything I wanted but that all I needed was family.

I grew up in an average middle class home, living with my late grandmother, my mother and my now 18 year old brother. Having been raised by two phenomenal women, I believe I have grown to be a self-motivated, hardworking, independent and considerate young lady. I am a compassionate and an outgoing individual offering an exceptional work ethic and the important ability to remain composed and calm in stressful situations and times. I am reliable, organized, and always ready to try something new outside my comfortable zone and tackle new challenges. I am very sociable and always enthusiastic when meeting new people but over the years I have also learnt to keep my circle small and still be an outgoing person.

My mother would be my biggest inspiration in life. Despite the grueling economic situation in my home country, she has single handedly managed to raise two kids with the utmost love and dedication to give us a better life than she had growing up. The biggest lesson she has taught me and never forgets to remind me is that “if God is for us, who can be against us.” My late grandmother, an even stronger woman herself, was and is still my favorite person. Much of my personality and characteristics resemble her own and although dementia overtook her in the last few years she was with us, the more I appreciated her presence in my life and the role she played in making me the person I am today. On the other hand my brother Tafadzwa, a “Dennis the Menace” in my perspective, is big fanatic of anything and everything sport. Although we have our occasional quarrels, when life gets too hectic he is always there with a joke or two to take away the stressful and heart-wrenching times that sometimes creep their way into our lives.

I am very much into gender advocacy. In secondary school I joined the United Nations Foundation of Girl Up, which is just basically a campaign that channels its energy and compassion to raise awareness and funds for programs of the United Nations that help some of the world’s hardest-to-reach adolescent girls and is dedicated to securing equal opportunities for underprivileged adolescent girls in developing countries. Having formed a branch that fell under this foundation in my school, I strived to raise awareness and advocate for all girls to have equal opportunities regardless of their backgrounds, race and or religion. Whilst also raising funds and facilitating sanitary wear drives for underprivileged girls in the Mutasa District, Mutare Zimbabwe. Even after having finished my secondary education I am still heavily involved in Girl Up, but under Girl Up Zimbabwe, which is the formal branch for the United Nations in Zimbabwe. In which we tackle everything that concerns the girl child and women in Zimbabwe from; gender based violence, education, health care, mental health and so on.

Also for most of my life, I have enjoyed advocating for cancer awareness and had the honor of working alongside cancer associations such as Kidzcan. An organization focused on child cancer relief in Zimbabwe, raising awareness on childhood cancer, fundraising towards drugs, welfare needs of childhood cancer patients and their families and most importantly providing emotional support to those affected by the devastations of dealing with cancer. Apart from that I love anything and everything novels, I am a big reader but romance would be most definitely my favorite genre. I also love to cook. My fondest childhood memories are cooking with my grandmother, her favorite place in the house was always the kitchen, and although she is late it has become one of my favorite pastimes.

All round I believe that I am an average student. Well I made sure I put my best foot forward when it came to my academics and outside the classroom, plus put a smile on my mum’s face end of term with a good report card. I was privileged enough to attend some of the best schools in my home country, from elementary all the way up to secondary school. I did my junior schooling (Lusitania Primary school) for seven years, where I was fortunate enough to learn a bit of Portuguese and a gain passion for swimming. I then went on to attend an all girls’ secondary school(Chisipite Senior School) for 2 years, where I learnt a bit of French, and later awarded a scholarship for swimming to attend another school further away from home for the last 4 years of secondary school. A mixed boarding school (Hillcrest College) in Mutare, a couple of hours away from my home city of Harare. In my senior year I took on more responsibilities and roles in school; as a school and hostel prefect, house captain, school swimming team captain amongst a few other roles. I finished my final year with A’Level Cambridge Examinations (in Travel & Tourism, Literature in English and Business Studies), an academic award in Travel & Tourism and an Outstanding Service Award (an award given to one final year student, annually for exceptional service to the school community and the wider community).

When the world came to stand still last year, I started learning German just for fun. In the beginning I questioned whether I would be able to do it, so I got myself a private tutor and I starting learning all the small basics of the language and before I knew it I had written and passed my A1 German exam. From there, the only way was up. I started doing some research when my curiosity on how I could further improve my literacy skills in the language got the best of me. I came across the Aupair program, where I found I could further my language skills by visiting and living with a German family for one year. I decided to go for it because it did not just allow me to improve my language skills whilst also allowing me to travel the world but also gave me the opportunity to gain some professional experience in child care, to give me some clarity on whether I should take up child care or tourism studies as a profession in the future. It also appealed to because I see it is an experience for cultural exchange, an opportunity to also bring my own African culture and lifestyle to Germany and hopefully teach you something about the language, customs and traditions of where I come from.

In the future after being privileged enough to be your aupair, I would very much like to continue with my education and attend a German university and accomplish one of my long term goals of getting my university degree. Also I would like to further my German and hopefully one day become a fluent speaker.

Lastly, I do not believe that child care giving is not only about the care and supervision of a child or multiple children at a time but also about showing love and compassion, acting as someone that young kids can look up to and most importantly being someone that children can find trust and protection in.  I am not only a big sister to my little brother but I am also a little sister to my older cousin brothers and sisters. By being a big sister I only hope to always support, protect and love my brother and as a little sister I look to my elder siblings to protect, support and love me. By being a big sister in my own home, a sister to my younger cousins and also having been a senior in hostel to juniors who were practically were my little brothers and sisters when I was at school. I came to understand how much my actions influenced them, the bad and the good, how to deal with different types of children and most importantly how to show them love. Children are different, and there is no right or wrong way to take care of them. It just takes love and dedication. I just hope that you opportunity to show your children this love and dedication.
